Project overview Bosnia and Herzegovina 2008
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Today’s Children are tomorrow’s parents
Under this title Kinderpostzegels (CNF country coordinator) and TALDi (Tuzla) have started the implementation of a three year project for children from multi-problem families in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Project interventions are focused on the improvement of the quality of life and developmental opportunities of these children. The project is financially supported by the Matra Programme of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the number of multi-problem families is constantly increasing due to the effects of the war and the deterioration of the socio-economic situation. Growing up in a multi-problem family endangers the social-emotional development of a child, while self-confidence is often low. Feelings of depression are not uncommon. Often these children are less able to share their thoughts and intentions with others and could feel isolated from their community. All of these factors significantly reduce a person’s quality of life and make integration into society more difficult. Apart from that, there is a serious risk to enter into the “Cycle of Violence”.
The official start of the project was accompanied by a PR campaign with the main message "THEY LEARN FROM US". The PR campaign is aiming at raising awareness amongst both the general public and the authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina about the position and needs of children from multi-problem families, as to create favourable assumptions for adequate and timely support to children at risk.
Through the granted funds non governmental organisations are supported in the process of establishment and operational work of 7 day care centres in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will focus its interventions on provision of high quality and child focussed support for children from multi-problem families. Seven organisations will soon open their centre. Centres will be established in Čelinac, Gornji Vakuf/Uskoplje, Konjic, Ljubija, Novi Grad/Bosanski Novi, Trebinje and Tuzla. Also in Subotica in Serbia and Pljevlja in Montenegro, centres will be established. The staff of the centres will participate in 11 trainings and benefit from monitoring visits.
The project has its own website, where the products of the PR campaign can be viewed and a lot of additional information is made available.
